The
BC Association of Travel Writers held a successful conference…its 5th-Annual Symposium…at
the Abercorn Inn in Richmond, where Vancouver's Daniel Wood kicked off a rousing
and informative afternoon for over 60 attendees.
One of Canada's best known magazine writers and winner of 31 regional and national writing awards, Vancouver's Daniel Wood has worked in the media for thirty years, is the author of 14 books and has traveled to almost half of the countries of the world. Prior to working as a writer, he taught in and organized schools and has taught at SFU for the last 20 years.
A
masterful storyteller, Daniel regaled us with a lively look at the perils and
pleasures along the travel writing trail in his address entitled "How to
Look A Rhinoceros in the Eye: A Survival Guide for the Wayward Travel Writer."
Members and non-members alike found his humourous address to be stimulating, provocative
and inspiring.
The afternoon concluded with stimulating multimedia presentations from three of our four Industry Members, this year's new innovation.
MALAYSIA:
As Sandra personalized the highlights of this exotic country, story possibilities
to suit every focus emerged in the cultural diversity of this colourful country:
festivals, cuisine, historic sights as well as a large range of activities.
Jordan:
Representing "a peaceful country in a rough neighbourhood," Frank outlined this
country's 100,000-year history and discussed the possibilities for extraordinary
adventures in perfectly preserved history. He is interested in developing unique
assignments to fit writers interests in this country of unexpected contrasts.
SPECTACULAR
INK: This company works with BC and Canadian clients. Jayne welcomes journalists,
supporting them in the development of story ideas and customizing itineraries;
sometimes press trips are offered. The beautiful BC properties outlined suggested
many possibilities for unique stories.
As a long list of prizes were drawn and presented to lucky winners, light snacks and refreshments were enjoyed. Following the event, many members joined a Beers With Peers session in the onsite Pub.
