On July 12, 2008, the BC Association of Travel Writers held a highly successful conference-its 6th Annual Symposium and Gala-at the Sandman Hotel in Vancouver. Over forty members and non-members enjoyed two stimulating workshops.

BCATW President and Treasurer Robert Scheer, who currently owns or manages more than 65 different web domains and has discovered several ways actually to earn money from websites, outlined in simple steps how to set up an effective site. In Website in a Day: How To Set Up Your Own Effective Website, he clearly described a list of basic steps for building an effective website, including reference to an online tutorial that can help accomplish the project. Once registered for all the required aspects such as deciding on the site's goal, keywords have been selected, domain name registered, host selected and all software (much of it inexpensive or free) is in place, establishing a site is relatively easy to do and can even make money. And the best way to set up a website is to get started on it!

At the break, everyone enjoyed light snacks and refreshments as a multimedia presentation featured our many major door prize donors.

During the second workshop, experienced and well-known cultural and travel photographer Peter Langer, who has shot pictures in over 150 countries over more than 30 years, presented Travel Photography Tips.

Setting the scene for the practical aspects of taking great travel pictures and emphasizing the importance of the travel image, Peter's inspiring workshop began with a powerful slideshow, accompanied by music, "Impressions of Bolivia." And then with wit and wisdom, he provided reminders ranging from careful equipment/gear choices to tips for taking great sunset shots, people and shots from plane windows. Ultimately, our images must tell stories of their own and should not require explanation, except possibly for complementary detail. Peter concluded with strong reminders: "Don't give them away!"

All attendees received insulated bags (courtesy of Maui Visitors Bureau) and complimentary day passes to the Capilano Suspension Bridge.

Lastly, a long list of door prizes were drawn by Peter Langer and presented to many lucky winners.

As a long list of prizes were drawn and presented to lucky winners, light snacks and refreshments were enjoyed. Following the event, many members joined a Beers With Peers session in the onsite Pub.
